Learn More About Cerebral Palsy

Children with cerebral palsy have trouble controlling their movement because their disability affects motor control. Cerebral palsy is caused by brain injury or abnormal brain development early in life or before birth, resulting in detrimental effects that last the duration of their lives.

Medical nutrition therapy should be focused on meeting the child's energy and fluid requirements, using any interventions to assist with issues due to motor function and movement.

Generally, children born with cerebral palsy can expect to live between 30 and 70 years on average. Those with the longest life expectancies usually have more mobility, better medical care, adaptive equipment, greater autonomy, and independence. There is no cure for cerebral palsy and the condition lasts for life.
