How do you assess children
with cerebral palsy?

Cerebral palsy assessments can include motor skills tests which pertain to a thorough check of the child's fine and gross motor skills as well as brain imaging tests such as an MRI, Computerized Tomography (CT), cranial ultrasound or Electroencephalogram (EEG).8

A variety of therapies play an important role in treating cerebral palsy:

  1. Physical therapy including muscle training and other exercises can help the child's strength, flexibility, balance, motor development and mobility.

  2. Occupational therapy to gain independence by improving skills used for everyday activities.

  3. Speech and language therapy with can improve communication skills.

  4. Recreational therapy which can improve physical functionality, improve neurological connections, and give opportunity for participation in life-enhancing activities that improves a child’s physical, mental and social experiences.
